Build bed borders from wood yourself

Do you have a few beds in your garden and want to prevent weeds or the lawn from growing into them again and again? There are always bed borders to buy, but you can also easily make them yourself.

To give your garden its own touch, you would like to build the bed border yourself. This saves you money and you can make these individually.

Build a bed border out of wood

First, think about which wood you want to use to build your bed border. You can use very simple boards for this, but round timbers are also well suited for this. The length of the individual boards or pieces of wood should be approx. 50 cm, because approx. 25 cm should go into the ground and up to 25 cm beyond. You can also vary this a little individually. Now you should calculate how much wood you are going to use. You get that and then you can start building the bed border.

  1. First of all, you saw the wood to the required length.
  2. To get a relatively straight border, it is best to stretch a piece of string where you want the border to go along.
  3. Now prick piece by piece with the spade along the cord approx. 25 cm deep into the earth. This is necessary to get the wood into the ground more easily.
  4. Build raised beds yourself - this is how it works with wood

Raised beds are, as the name suggests, beds that are not at ground level, but rather ...

  5. Then take a piece of your wood and insert it into those pre-punched holes. Use a hammer to tap the board or log until it is firmly in the ground. In order not to destroy the wood, put an old wooden board on top before working with the hammer.
  6. If the wood is now stuck in the earth and is firm, tap the earth with the hammer handle on the sides. Proceed in the same way with the following boards or logs and always make sure that the timbers look straight up out of the ground. You can always check this with a spirit level, not that you end up with a mountain and valley railway.
  7. So work your way along your string until you have a bed border at the end.
