What you need:

  • Beams or steel girders
  • Boards or plastic sheets
  • Screws
  • Angular elements

The bridge over your garden pond can be made of different materials. Wood is just as suitable as steel or plastic. There are also several options for fastening.

Preparing for your bridge

  1. If you choose wood, you will need beams that span the entire length of the bridge and are slightly longer to attach to the side. To do this, you should have your pond measured to determine which length has to be bridged. If about three meters of pond are to be overcome, then the beams should be 4.50 m long in order to fix them in the ground on the right and left.
  2. Then it is important to choose the right thickness of the beams. The main weight lies in the middle of your construction. Therefore, the longer your bridge becomes, the thicker the beams you should choose. For a length of 3 m, square timbers that are 14 cm high ("thickness" "and 8 cm wide) are sufficient. The weight should always be carried by the thicker side. D. H. the short sides of the beams are at the top and bottom of the construction, and the boards are screwed onto them and the long side runs vertically and stands in relation to the boards that are later attached to the timbers on the right Angle.
  3. After you have selected the square timbers accordingly, you can still prepare them for building. Regardless of whether you use wood or steel, both materials are exposed to the weather after construction and become porous or rust over time. Therefore, you can have your carrier resp. Provide wood with appropriate varnish to prevent the material from weathering. Pay attention to environmentally friendly substances that do not affect the water quality in the pond - especially if you have pond inhabitants (fish, frogs etc.) have.
  4. Finally, to attach the beams, you should remove enough soil at the ends of the bridge to create a flat surface and to lay the beams securely. You can put some gravel on this surface to enable a firm stand. After that, you can sort of dig in the beams.

How to build your bridge from the substructure

  1. Now you can attach the individual boards or walking plates to the laid beams, which then form the area over which you cross the pond. Cut these accordingly so that they protrude slightly over the beams.
  2. Then you should also protect the individual wooden boards from moisture and UV light with varnishes and paints. If, on the other hand, you use plastics to build the walking surface of your bridge, no further post-processing is possible because these materials are weather-resistant. Some hardware stores offer special plastic sheets that are made of PVC or other hard fabrics and can be cut into shape like wood. There are panels with a wide variety of patterns and colors, and relief structures are also possible. So you can choose a material that at first glance doesn't even look like plastic, but looks almost like real wood.
  3. If you have now attached the boards or panels, then your transition is complete. After building, you can then attach a railing or decorate the bridge - for example with a wind turbine and flower pots.
