Convert hours to seconds

It happens again and again that you have to quickly convert hours into seconds - usually without a calculator. It's not difficult with a few tricks.

How to convert hours into seconds

mathematics is not as unworldly as many believe. A little knowledge of math helps with the problem of how to convert hours to seconds. The conversion from 18 hours to seconds serves as an example.

  • An hour has 60 minutes and a minute has 60 seconds. So you can simply convert hours to minutes first, i.e. times 60, and then times 60 again to convert this result into seconds. (18 hours = 18 x 60 minutes = 1080 minutes = 1080 x 60 seconds = 64800 seconds)
  • You can also do this calculation in such a way that instead of calculating hours x 60 x 60, you simply calculate hours x 6 x 6 and then take the result times 100. Then you don't need to keep so many zeros in mind when converting.

Easy ways to convert time units

  • As a rough estimate to get an approximate order of magnitude, use the following consideration: 6 x 6 is 36, so about 40. 18 hours are then approximately 18 x 40 x 100 seconds = 72,000 seconds.
  • If you have a problem multiplying by 4, you can do it differently. Double the hours (18 x 2 = 36) and then double that result again (36 x 2 = 72). Finally, since you have to multiply by 40, not 4, you have to multiply the result by 10 and you get 720. Then of course you have to multiply it by 100. And so you are back at 72,000 seconds.
  • Convert minutes to hours - this is how you quickly convert time units in your head

Converting time units is not quite as easy as you would like it to be ...

  • Based on this estimate, you can also determine the seconds exactly, because 36 is 40 minus 4. So you can calculate the number of hours forty times as described and then subtract the number of hours four times. Mathematically, the calculation is 18 x 36 x 100 = 18 x (40-4) x 100 = (18 x 40 - 18 x 4) x 100 = (720 - 72) x 100 = 648 x 100 = 64800.

So if you want to convert a certain number of hours into seconds, double it twice and append a zero, subtract the number of hours doubled twice and append two zeros again at. (5 hours are then 20 (twice the 5 doubled); 200 (zero appended); 200 - 20 = 180 (twice twice the number of hours deducted); 18000 seconds (two zeros appended).)
