Rising water and sewage costs make building wells interesting for many homeowners, because having their own spring in the garden saves a lot of money. There are a few things you should definitely pay attention to when building a well.

- The extraction of groundwater - and this also includes the construction of wells - is subject to the Water Resources Act (WHG) and the corresponding water laws of the federal states. As a rule, the water management authorities of the district offices are responsible for this.
- Before you start building a well, you must contact the responsible district office. The use of groundwater for household purposes and the irrigation of gardens does not require a permit, but you cannot rely on it. In water protection areas or if a drop in the groundwater level is to be feared, the permit can be refused. It is best to do some research before you start building a well.
- Note the requirements that may be associated with the use of the groundwater. In many areas you are allowed to build a well without a permit, but you are only allowed to draw water from it using hand-operated pumps. Think about whether building a well is then of interest to you.
- Make sure that there is groundwater at a depth of less than 10 m, as water that lies at a greater depth can hardly be used. The water management office can help you assess how deep the groundwater is in the ground. Perhaps, however, neighbors can also provide you with information.
- Not all water that you find when building a well is groundwater. In the vicinity of rivers, lakes and streams, there are often veins in the ground into which surface water has seeped. A well that pumps surface water is not stable over the course of the year, because such a well does not have any water during the hot, dry times. This limits the use of the well. Surface water is also of inferior quality and often even heavily polluted.
- Even if you are pumping groundwater with the well, the water should not be used as drinking water, because the uncontrolled pipe e.g. B. Bacteria can lodge. The well water cannot be used for the paddling pool or the pool. Consider whether building a well is interesting from these aspects.
