Build your own wooden garden gate

You can build a wooden garden gate without a locking mechanism yourself according to the instructions. Do this step by step.

The appearance of the garden gate

Before you start building your new wooden garden gate, make a design. In it you record the shape and size of the gate along with all dimensions. Also consider whether the strips of your garden gate should be installed horizontally or vertically.

In your design, plan the shape of the individual wooden slats, for example with or without a point, with vertical attachment. Decide whether the garden gate should consist of a frame or just two horizontal and several vertical slats.

As soon as you have a precise idea of the new gate in the garden, make a drawing. Calculate the material requirements and purchase everything at a hardware store.

Build a gate out of wood

What you need to build:

  • Wooden slats
  • flat iron angles
  • Screws
  • Door hinges
  • Wood glaze

The new garden gate on the wooden garden fence is much more stable if it has its own frame. When building such a garden gate, proceed as follows:

Sometimes it may be necessary to install a new garden gate. If you don't buy a gate ...

  1. Buy material. Buy pre-cut wooden slats with a 45-degree angle on both sides at the hardware store.

  2. Manufacture frame. Make a frame from the slats (45-degree angle) using the flat 90-degree iron angles that you screw to the slats.

  3. Attach battens. Attach the vertical or horizontal slats to this frame. With vertical or horizontal lath assembly, you can achieve more stability by attaching one or two laths in the opposite direction. Then screw the other wooden slats onto it.

  4. Choose optics. Depending on the look you want, you can let the slats protrude or finish flush with the frame.

  5. Paint wood. Finally, paint the wood with a weather-resistant glaze or apply a layer of wax. It looks particularly pretty when it is lacquered.

Fasten the garden gate

The finished wooden garden gate now needs the assembly of hinges so that you can hang it up, open it and close it. To do this, choose the left or right side and mount two door hinges there with two screws. Now hang the gate there.

To be able to lock it, attach a lock cylinder to the wooden gate. To do this, mill out the outer slat so that the lock cylinder fits into it. Screwing on the door handle should then again not be a problem.

The self-construction of a wooden gate on the garden fence can usually be mastered by any hobby craftsman. The material and the costs for it are manageable.
