You can grow your own fruit and vegetables on a garden plot and enjoy the warm summer days in the fresh air. So that you also have some privacy there, you can plant a thuja hedge around the property.

the Thuja is called in the German tree of life and belongs to the cypress family. It is very popular as a hedge plant because it is evergreen and smells good. In addition, it tolerates a cut very well and is otherwise very easy to care for. The best time to plant a thuja hedge around your garden plot is in late summer and fall so that the plants can grow well into winter. If you plan to plant in spring, you should do so by mid-June at the latest, before it gets really hot.

How to frame your garden plot

  1. Before you plant a hedge around your garden property, you should find out what minimum distance to the property line you have to keep so that there is no trouble later. These regulations are different in the individual federal states, you can find the regulations in the neighborhood law of your federal state or you can simply ask the building authority of your municipality. But also keep in mind that you will also need to cut your hedge from the outside and speak to the neighbors if necessary.
  2. As far as the nature of the soil is concerned, the thuja is quite undemanding, it just doesn't tolerate waterlogging at all. If you have very dense soil where it is difficult for water to drain, you should dig it up and put in a drainage layer of gravel before planting.
  3. Thuja plants for hedges are mostly sold in a pot or container. For a hedge around your garden plot, it is best to create a planting ditch that should be twice as wide and twice as deep as the roots of the plants.
  4. Dip the plants in a bucket of water until no more air bubbles rise so that the roots can soak up water.
  5. Fertilize and care for thuja hedge

So that your thuja hedge grows quickly and soon offers good privacy, you need ...

  6. As the bottom layer, fill the planting pit with good potting soil, which provides the thuja with the necessary nutrients in the first place. Place the plants on top so that the ball is flush with the surface of the earth or a few centimeters below it. If you have bought plants in a ball net, you should cut the net a little. The distance between the individual thuja plants should be about 30 to 40 centimeters.
  7. Then fill in the gaps again with soil and carefully tread on it around the plants with your feet. Shake the thuja a little so that soil also falls between the roots.
  8. Then water the hedge abundantly and make sure to water it regularly for the first few weeks until the plants have developed enough roots to support themselves.

A thuja hedge will grow poorly if around the trunk weed grows, so remove it regularly. To prevent weeds from the outset, you can also cover the ground under the plants with bark mulch, which also ensures that the soil does not dry out.
