Things to know about acrylic paints

  • Acrylic paints do not have chemically dissolved particles that form a paint film when a solvent evaporates, but rather small paint particles that float in the water. Acrylic lacquers are therefore dispersions, a mixture of substances that do not dissolve in one another, such as sand in water. For this reason, acrylic varnishes must be stirred particularly thoroughly before you can use them, they tend to separate.
  • You can usually mix acrylic varnishes with each other, including those from different manufacturers. However, the paint surfaces can then be irregular because the manufacturers design the paints differently, especially with regard to the size and shape of the paint particles.
  • Since conventional paints are real solutions, while acrylic paints are dispersions, you cannot mix these different paints.
  • All acrylic lacquers cure in a dense layer that is resistant to solvents, acids and alkalis. Forget about wise advice that you can use acetone or nail polish remover to dissolve acrylic varnishes. However, these agents can leave dull spots on the surface or penetrate through fine cracks and the Underground to damage.
  • The difference between the different types of paint for wood, Metal, stone or plastic consists primarily in the surface quality of the cured acrylic varnish, especially in the ability to work with the substrates, so that no Cracks appear.

How to use acrylic-based varnishes

  1. Only use acrylic varnish that is suitable for the material you want to paint. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Prepare the surface as usual; it must be clean, dry and free of grease. You should sand down old paintwork. Acrylic lacquers do not adhere well to other lacquers. If a surface has been painted with a varnish that is not acrylic varnish, you should remove this completely or apply a primer with an adhesion promoter for acrylic varnishes.
  3. Apply the varnish evenly in parallel strips that slightly overlap. If you are making a second coat, apply it at right angles to the first runs.
  4. Wash all tools immediately with plenty of water, because once it has hardened, acrylic lacquers can no longer be removed. Because of this, you need to wash off stains right away as well.

If you want to repaint a surface painted with acrylic varnish, you have to sand down the old varnish or sand it off completely. You can also peel off the varnish with a scraper and a heat gun. On the other hand, solvent stripping is not possible with acrylic paints.
