Anyone doing an apprenticeship in retail will sooner or later come into contact with the terms form of sale, type of business and product range. This does not reveal the connection between all three terms. But the explanation is not as difficult as it might seem.

Work in retail is varied and complex.

The type of business is considered a generic term

  • The concept as a whole, with which a business appears in the retail trade and which is only defined by the range and type of sale, is referred to as the type of business. Thus there is an inseparable connection between the terms.
  • The type of business, i.e. the type of business, can also be clearly identified in most cases. This is wanted by retailers so that the customer knows directly whether he can find a product there or not.

The range explained simply

  • An assortment is used to describe all goods or services offered. A distinction is made between department store, department store or specialty shop.
  • While a department store (Karstadt, Kaufhof) has a wide selection (electronics, clothing, Household items etc.) has on offer, the department store (Media Markt, C&A) specializes in goods aligned (e.g. B. clothing or electronics only).
  • The specialist shop, on the other hand, is very limited to one product (e.g. B. Glasses) and sells almost nothing else (e.g. Fielmann). The selection of products of this type is very large there.

There are these types of sales

  • The type of service is called sales form. Full service, often found in specialist shops, means competent advice and individual support from the seller.
  • The area code denotes self-service, which, however, includes the possibility of advice from staff if this is desired. This is found frequently and department stores and department stores.
  • The pure self-service does not require knowledgeable staff and requires that the customer knows exactly what he wants. Discount stores and bakery shops are such examples.

No connection with legal forms

  • Often the type of business is confused with the legal form. However, these terms are not directly related.
  • The legal form provides information on whether a company appears, for example, as a GmbH, GbR or AG.
