Cook the cauliflower whole

Cook cauliflower whole once. It not only looks beautiful when served, but is also easy to do.

  1. Take a medium sized cauliflower. Cut off the outer leaves and straighten the stalk also on the lower side with a sharp knife.
  2. Prepare a large bowl of cold water and stir in a tablespoon of salt.
  3. Put the whole cauliflower upside down in the cold salt water and let it stand for a few minutes. This will help you get any insects out of the cauliflower quickly.
  4. In the meantime, bring enough salted water to the boil in a large saucepan - the cauliflower should fit completely in it - so that one third of the cauliflower is covered with the water.
  5. Cooking cauliflower and broccoli together - is that possible?

Would you like to make a delicious casserole with cauliflower and broccoli? Then ask ...

  6. Add a little sugar to the boiling water and possibly a little too milk. This allows the cauliflower to keep its white color.
  7. Put the whole cauliflower in the pot and close it with a lid. Reduce the heat a little, the cauliflower should only cook in slightly bubbly water, mainly through the steam.
  8. The bigger the cauliflower, the longer the cooking time, but after 20 minutes you should cut a floret with a small knife to see if the cauliflower is done. The cauliflower should never fall apart or be too soft. It should still be firm to the bite.

Prepare the cauliflower in the steamer

You can prepare the cauliflower a little quicker in a steamer. If you don't have a steamer, you can also use a steamer insert for a normal saucepan.

  1. Separate the individual florets from the cauliflower.
  2. Clean the florets under cold running water.
  3. Switch on the steamer or bring the water to the boil in a saucepan with a cooking insert. Put the cauliflower florets in the steamer or in the cooking insert.
  4. Depending on the amount, you should test a rose after 8 minutes by checking with the knife whether the cauliflower is already soft.

Cauliflower is not poisonous, even when raw. So you can vary the cooking time to suit your taste. However, you should remember: the longer the cauliflower cooks, the more ingredients are lost. Therefore, the following applies: the gentler and shorter, the better.
