Build a carport on a house wall

You have two options to build a carport next to a house wall. It can be built onto this or designed as a free-standing one. Both types have advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages and disadvantages of attached carports

You can build a freestanding carport right next to the house and just that roof connect to the house wall. Alternatively, they do without supports next to the wall and instead attach the structure to the wall. The wall therefore supports the extension.

  • An extension to the house wall speaks in favor of the fact that the carport moves less of its own when it is firmly attached to the wall. The wall connection of the carport roof is therefore easier, it does not have to bridge any movements. It is problematic to dig foundations next to the house wall for the supports. These must be based in the natural soil. You will only find this stable ground below the foundation of the house, because at building the area around the house has been dug up.
  • But there are also good reasons to put a carport on supports instead of attaching it to the house on one side: The house does not have to absorb any additional forces if the carport is free next to the house. In addition, you do not need to damage the thermal insulation, since the annex will not be attached to the house.

The problems posed by a free-standing carport are greater than those caused by an attached one. With special dowels, for example, there are no thermal bridges when you drill into an insulated wall. You should therefore opt for an attached carport.

You have to pay attention to this when constructing on the house wall

So that the carport is secure and the house is not damaged by water, it is essential to observe the following:

Sealing the roof with the wall connection on the prefabricated carport - the work steps simply explained

  • The carport can be wall-mounted in two ways. It either rests on a horizontal beam that you dowel on the wall or it has shortened supports that you attach vertically. If the wall has thermal insulation, follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the insulation system with regard to the installation material. You need for that AssemblySpecial dowels, as the insulation has to be bridged and thermal decoupling is necessary.
  • Carports with a flat roof or a pent roof are ideal for mounting on a house wall. The roof must have a slope that leads away from the house. A roof drainage between the house and the extension is not necessary.
  • You can also put a gable or a hipped roof on your carport. This makes roof drainage more difficult. Sloping surfaces that lead water to the house must end in a rain gutter. In the case of a hipped roof, a corresponding channel must also run at the front. Make sure that the water must flow away from the house in this too.
  • If a roof surface is adjacent to your house, a wall connection is always required. This prevents rainwater from running between the carport roof and the wall. The seal is also necessary on a steep slope. The connection can consist of a profile sheet. With these you dowel one leg to the wall, the other is on the roof of the carport. You also need to seal the cracks between the sheet metal and the wall with silicone. It is easy when you use ribbons Wall or chimney connection use.

By the way: Before starting construction, ask the municipality whether you can build a carport. The regulations are different. Usually you are only allowed to use an approved kit or an architect has to accompany the work.
