Construct a sleigh with wheels

Haven't you ever thought that it would be useful to be able to use a sled in the summer without snow? For this purpose, all you have to do is equip it with wheels. However, if you are fairly skilled at crafting, then you should think about it and try to find out where there may be difficulties.

What you need:

  • Drawing board
  • pencils
  • Tape measure
  • ruler
  • axles
  • bikes
  • drilling machine
  • drill
  • screwdriver
  • oil

Buy and redesign the sled

In order to equip your sled with wheels, you have to buy it first. So go to your trusted hardware store and get a good old wooden sled with two runners. When that is done, you should make a large drawing of the winter sports equipment.

  • First of all, your sled needs suspensions for the axles fitted with wheels. It would be easiest if you simply drill two holes in each side of the wooden webs of the runners at the front and rear, where you can then push the axles through. With this variant, however, you would have to attach the wheels later.
  • Then you also have the option of getting four rubbish bin wheels from specialist retailers, each of which is bolted to the runners' webs with a quick-release axle.
  • Here you drill suitable holes, insert the quick-release axle and screw it together with the wheel to the rear of the runner. You should just be careful not to make any holes that are too large wood to drill, otherwise the quick-release axles would not have a firm hold.

  • After you have decided on a variant, you can complete the construction drawing. However, there are still a few things to consider when converting your sled that you should consider on your construction drawing.
  • Repairing the sled - this is how you change the runners

  • For the wheels, for example, you should mention that they should be treaded and made of solid rubber. Also describe the suspensions. Explain that the wheels are attached to the individual axles with ball bearings, which sometimes require a drop of oil at different intervals.
  • When designing, you should make sure that you can then dismantle the slide with a few simple steps. So you have practically an all-weather vehicle.

If you then only want to move the slide on wheels, you can use small wheels that can move in all directions, which you simply drill and screw onto the runners.
