Motorbike with trailer on the highway

Motorcycles are often driven on motorways at speeds that hardly any motorist can achieve. But what does it look like when a trailer is attached to the motorcycle? Here is a brief summary of how you can safely ride your motorcycle on the motorway.

Drive safely - even with a motorcycle trailer.
Drive safely - even with a motorcycle trailer.

What you need:

  • StVO
  • StVZO
  • Manufacturer approval
  • Security check

Safety when driving the motorcycle trailer

There is a terrifying ignorance about how a motorcycle trailer can be safely driven on the motorway or in traffic in general.

  • Make sure that the connection between the motorcycle and the trailer is secure, i.e. only use an approved coupling and attach the trailer according to the regulations. Clotheslines are not a secure connection.
  • If there is a braking device for the trailer, check whether it works correctly and also the brake light when Brakes lights up.
  • Do the usual safety check that should be done before every trip. Do the tires enough profile? Is the air pressure correct? Has the tire expired? Are there no loose parts that could come off while driving?
  • Do not overload the trailer or load it on one side. The load should be as low as possible and secured against slipping.
  • Trailers and their maximum permissible speed

If you would like to have a trailer on your vehicle, you can ...

  • The maximum speed for a motorcycle with a trailer, whether on the motorway or the country road, is 60 km / h per hour. You read that right: 60 km / h hour, that results from the STVO ยง 3 Abs. 2. In part b it says literally: "For vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t, for all vehicles with trailers, with the exception of passenger cars and trucks and mobile homes each up to a permissible total weight of 3.5 t, as well as for buses with passengers for which there are no more seats available 60 km / h " (Quote end). The motorcycle with trailer is one of the motor vehicles with a trailer and is not a car, truck or mobile home. As a result, this combination is only allowed to drive 60 km / h in Germany.

Autobahn and motorcycle combination

  • The motorcycle combination, whether with a trailer and / or sidecar, is allowed on the autobahn, although only vehicles that can drive over 60 km / h due to their design are allowed to drive there. Your team can drive faster than 60 km / h, it just mustn't! For this reason, you can also drive a motorcycle with a trailer on the motorway.
  • Abroad, you can even drive faster with a motorcycle and trailer, just as fast as it is allowed there. But do not exceed the maximum speed for which your trailer has been approved for the motorcycle, because you must of course not exceed this there either.

If you follow these rules, the motorcycle ride with a trailer on the highway will be safe and without problems.
