Not in the mood for people

Hermits, forest people, dropouts - one hears again and again of people who turn their backs on civilization. Do you need peace and seclusion and don't feel like meeting people? Then a life in the forest might be just right for you.

First of all, it should be said that there are of course different ways of living alone in the forest. If you are not in the mood for people, you can be very radical and go into the forest practically 'without anything'. Of course, this is not something for everyone, which is why we are initially looking for a more moderate variant.

Live conventionally in the forest

  • In the real estate advertisements in newspapers and on the Internet there are always suitable offers, namely secluded houses on forest properties for sale or rent. With this middle solution, you can enjoy the conveniences of modern life, such as electricity and running water, but you still have your peace and quiet and are away from the hectic city life exposed.
  • Houses in the forest usually also have a piece of land that surrounds the building and shields you and lets you relax. If you don't feel like being in constant contact with people, you will find the perfect retreat.

Get out - the radical way if you don't feel like meeting people

However, there are always people for whom it is not enough to simply live in the forest. They want civilization to be complete move sweep and live in harmony with nature.

  • First of all, it should be said that in Germany you are not allowed to simply move into the forest. Before doing this, you need to find out about the owner of the piece of forest you have chosen and discuss with him whether you are allowed to live in his forest. Then you should be aware that you are not allowed to hunt and, as a rule, you are not allowed to cut wood.
  • Combating self-doubt - this is how you will gain more self-confidence

With self-doubt through life? You surely don't want that. Self-doubts are ...

  • Once you have found a suitable piece of forest, you should think about how exactly you want to live there. Do you want to build a hut for yourself? Then discuss this with the forest owner. You can get wood cheaply at the hardware store. Those who also want to forego cash can simply knock on the door of their (still) neighbors and ask for scraps of wood. Usually there is more going on than you think!
  • If you want to make things a little easier for yourself, simply opt for a life in a tent. Used tents are already very cheap and in the wind-protected forest they can usually withstand German autumn weather.
  • Very important: Make sure you organize a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags keep you warm down to very low temperatures.
  • For many hermits, at the very beginning of their secluded life, the important question of nutrition arises. There are two ways here: Either you decide to feed yourself from nature, i.e. mushrooms, berries and everything that the forest has to offer. In that case, please find out more about the edibility of the plants and mushrooms that can be found in Germany! The second option is to continue to get supplies from the supermarket as normal. Most dropouts get the money for this by collecting bottles. There is a deposit of up to 25 cents for bottles and cans. Smaller auxiliary work is also often taken on by dropouts - but this route requires compromises if you don't feel like meeting people. Because if you collect bottles or work, you inevitably run into them.
  • The final piece of advice is: take good care of your valuables. Many hermits hide their things in vessels that they bury in the ground.

If you decide to quit, please keep the following in mind: Many people who try life in the wild quickly realize that it is not for them. In this case, always keep a back door open to normal life.
