There are several rainwater tanks that you can install underground or above ground in your garden. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Weigh which variant is best for you.

Choose a suitable rainwater tank

By installing a rainwater tank in the garden, you can significantly reduce your drinking water consumption. There are rainwater tanks made of concrete or plastic, with different capacities, in different colors and for above-ground or underground installation.

  • Think in advance which rainwater tank is best for your purposes.
  • To do this, compare the advantages and disadvantages of different tanks.
  • Ordinary water tanks for installation in the garden are mostly made of plastic and have a relatively small capacity, which is 500 to 1000 liters.
  • A 2000 liter tank offers you more capacity, but in most cases it is placed in the basement and not in the garden.
  • Hide the water tank in the garden - this is how it works

  • If you also want to use the rainwater in the house, for example to wash your laundry, you will run out of stock.
  • Set up an above-ground water tank on a firm and level surface, preferably near a rain gutter. An additional fastening of the tank is not necessary.
  • Lay the end of your rain gutter directly into the water tank so that you can catch the rainwater in a targeted manner.

  • A water tank installed underground gives you the advantage that you cannot see it. It also has a large capacity.
  • Underground tanks can hold up to 5000 liters of water.
  • Compared to the above-ground installation, however, the workload is much more extensive. Please also consider that you have to provide appropriate maintenance shafts with this installation variant.
  • Of course, the costs are also relatively high compared to above-ground installation. Nevertheless, underground rainwater tanks are a sensible investment that will pay for itself after a few years.

Which rainwater tank to install in your garden should be decided based on your personal needs and the local conditions. The above-ground installation of a water tank is probably the cheaper, more cost-effective variant that can be implemented quickly. The installation of an underground rainwater tank is more complex and expensive. In return, it offers significantly more capacity and can be lowered into the ground to save space.
