Only plant flower boxes after installing drainage

Every flower box and all plant troughs need a coarse layer underground, which is used as drainage, i.e. H. for water drainage. The drainage layer prevents the water from accumulating and therefore prevents sensitive plant roots from remaining in the water.

  • Use a planter that has at least one drainage hole. Water that collects in the drainage layer runs off over it.
  • Split, expanded clay and gravel are suitable for a drainage layer. Expanded clay is recommended to fill a flower box that is supposed to hang on a balcony parapet. This is very light and the suspension is loaded with less weight. Gravel and split, on the other hand, are suitable for flower boxes and plant troughs that should stand on the floor.
  • If you are crushing the shards of broken clay pots and you have enough material available, you can use this as a drainage layer too. A thickness of 3-4 cm is sufficient.
  • Place a geotextile on top of the drainage layer in your flower box or planter. You can get this in different strengths in the hardware store. Geovlies with 100 g / sqm in a flower box is completely sufficient. The fleece prevents soil from being washed into the drainage layer together with the irrigation water. Another advantage is that you won't injure yourself on potsherds when planting or transplanting because the pieces are covered by the fleece and you are not in contact with earth come.
  • Plant the flower box with colorful flowers

A flower box makes the balcony or garden appear friendlier. …

  • Now fill in the soil that is suitable for the plants you have chosen on the geo-fleece. If necessary, you will receive advice from a specialist gardener.

When hanging window boxes or setting up planters, please make sure that Irrigation water does not run off in an uncontrolled manner and damage the house facade or on the neighboring balcony can cause.
