Children's pants tend to break at the knees. Patches are a great way to mend children's pants with defective knees. Provided with it right from the start, the pants last longer.

If you want to apply patches to children's trousers, you have various options. The easiest way is to use ready-made iron-on patches. However, if you have scraps of fabric, you can use them to make patches yourself.

Iron-on patches

Iron-on patches can be easily applied to the fabric with the iron. However, they are more expensive than homemade patches. The application is particularly quick.

  1. Lay the pants in front of you with the areas where the patches are to be applied. Make sure you have a solid and heat-resistant surface. It can be an ironing board. You can just as easily use a table that you protect with a towel and a sturdy cotton fabric.
  2. The pants should be washed. Iron the knees flat and make sure that the fabric is wrinkle-free. Depending on your needs, you can run a lint roller over the fabric.
  3. The iron-on patches are usually provided with a removable protective film on the back. Peel off the film.
  4. Make patches yourself - that's how it works

You can easily make beautiful patches, patches or stickers for clothing yourself ...

  5. Now place the patches lengthways on the fabric.
  6. Press the patches down a little and cover them with a light, lint-free cotton cloth.
  7. Place the preheated iron on the cotton cloth. Unless otherwise noted in the instructions enclosed with the patches, the ironing temperature is 40 ° C.
  8. Press the iron firmly down on the fabric. Wait a few seconds before slowly moving it to the next spot.
  9. Iron the patches with the cotton fabric on top until the patches are firmly attached to the trousers.
  10. Now turn the pants over on their left side and repeat the process on the back of the pants where the patches are. Here, too, you use the cotton fabric as an intermediate layer.
  11. You can now turn the pants back on their right side. The patches should now be firmly attached to the fabric of the pants and protect the knees well.
  12. If you want to wash the trousers with the patches, you should turn them inside out as a precaution. In addition, the temperature should not exceed 40 ° C.

Children's trousers with patches made from scraps of fabric

If you want to make patches yourself, you can use scraps of old fabric for this. The fabric should be as firm as possible. Light trousers made of cotton or linen can, however, also be provided with patches made of lighter fabrics.

  1. Make a stencil in the shape and size you want the patches to be. It should be an inch or two larger than the patch you want. Make sure that the size of the template does not exceed the size of the leftover fabric. Apart from the classic, oval shape of the patches, there are various shapes that are suitable. You can choose hearts, circles, or something more complicated like cars or birds. When choosing the motif, make sure that the outlines are sufficient to recognize the motif.
  2. Place the Vliesofix on the back of the fabric for the patches with the paper side up.
  3. Iron it on and see if it sticks to the fabric.
  4. Place your stencil on the Vliesofix.
  5. Trace the edge. Cut out the design and peel off the paper from the back.
  6. Now iron your motif onto the children's trousers that you want to apply patches as described in the above paragraph. Check that the patches are firmly attached to the fabric.
  7. Fasten the stabilizer under the patches on the left side of the children's pants. It is used to hold the stitch in place and should be large enough to cover the entire embroidery from the back.
  8. Pin it in place with pins to keep it from slipping.
  9. Set up a tight zigzag stitch on your sewing machine.
  10. Place the patches under the foot of the sewing machine so that you sew the patches on the edge with the zigzag stitch.
  11. When you have reached the end, lightly sew over the beginning of the seam to secure the threads.
  12. Cut the threads and knot them.
  13. You can now carefully remove the stabilizer. You can use it many more times.

Have fun with the patches!
