The last MDK exam ended with a few shortcomings. In order to pass a new test without errors, you should consider a few things. Here is a small checklist for the most important audit approaches.

An MDK test ensures the quality of care.
An MDK test ensures the quality of care.

What you need:

  • a complete care documentation
  • motivated nursing staff
  • specially carried out controls
  • Team discussions

The MDK is coming - what do you do as an employee?

  • Today an MDK exam is already very regular and usually takes place once a year. The core task of the MDK is to ensure the quality of the care to ensure. The examiners of the medical service of the health insurance companies usually do not come alone, and the home supervisory authority often also comes with them. With a lot of documents, your home management is also precisely informed about the requirements and in most cases already knows which criteria are being checked and is therefore always aware of them prepared.
  • Correct and properly carried out care documentation in all points and areas of care is the best protection, if it is complications arise in the course of care, an MDK test is pending and the relatives want to take a case to court, for example.
  • The nursing staff and ultimately the nursing management are responsible for accurate, complete and timely documentation. For every person in need of care who has a home in a nursing home, a lot of things must be completely documented and documents must be filed: The master sheet must be included all data of the person in need of care, the complete anamnesis, the complete biography, a complete care plan according to the most modern criteria, a medication sheet Medical prescription sheet, a daily activation and mobility log, a completely logged basic care sheet, a fall log and a few more more. Sometimes up to 23 different care sheets were counted, which had to be filled out and signed every day. Today there is also computer-aided documentation in nursing, which makes things a lot easier, but is still an obstacle in the required timely documentation. So you should actually log and sign every care step immediately after it has been carried out, which is not always feasible.
  • The nursing staff must check the temperature of the medicine refrigerators in the ward kitchen every day and document and sign the exact temperature on a log. All Medication Name and opening date must be provided in the refrigerator and in the medicine room. The nursing staff must keep all existing medication locked and sort out expired medication. The ward room must always be locked.
  • Hygiene is very important. Various regulations apply to the handling of care utensils for each individual resident and the cleanliness of the common rooms and ward kitchens.

The exam takes place unannounced

  • Now it is the turn of the home management or the home operator. The employees can request that the examination take place in the presence of the home management, who should be informed immediately. You should therefore ask the staff of the MDK and the home supervisory authority for a little patience or go with the people in need of care to be checked. Ask the residents if you agree to have your room checked.
  • Most of the time the examiners are very nice. However, if someone is really brisk, don't let yourself be put off and intimidated. Do you run your home properly and properly? Then you have nothing to worry about. Most of the time, however, small defects were found to cover the costs of the MDK and home supervision that can be billed at a high price for the home, although the exam is actually a free consultation should.
  • As the home manager, you should carry out checks yourself together with the nursing staff. Take one point together every day, it won't take long. For example, today it would be your turn to check the ward refrigerator in ward 1. Are all medications labeled, is there an expired medication underneath? Is the refrigerator temperature correct? Make a note of what you checked. The next day it is station 2. The nursing management should check several resident documentation for completeness every day. For example, if certain documentation is missing on a certain day of the month, get the employee, who was responsible for it on that day and ask him to document what is missing if possible. If this is no longer possible, give the employee (as a little food for thought, so to speak) the responsibility for several documentations on his ward for a week. In this way, his understanding of what is happening is sharpened and his motivation for his work is strengthened. Many home managements today issue warnings for this. This should really be the last resort, if nothing else works. After all, everyone makes mistakes at some point, including you as the nursing service manager and home manager. Also pay attention to daily team discussions.
  • In a retirement or nursing home, there is often much more to consider than there is space to write here. If you list everything exactly, then nothing can go wrong.
