A holiday job often offers the opportunity to earn some extra money in free time during school or studies. But what if you already have a part-time job? If you keep a few points in mind, you can easily do both jobs at the same time.

It's a part-time job

  • A Part-time job can also be described as a part-time job, although both names leave open the scope of the respective employment.

  • If you earn more than 400 euros a month with your part-time job, it is an employment subject to social security contributions. This means that you have to pay contributions to all social security funds and hand in an income tax card to your employer.

  • If your monthly income is below 400 euros, one speaks of a so-called "Mini job“. The special thing about this is that neither wage tax is collected nor any other deductions made from your gross salary. So you get paid your full gross wage.

A vacation job is usually short-term

  • At a Vacation job it is mostly a

short term Occupation. It is typical for this that the employment may not extend over more than 2 months or 50 working days in a calendar year. Short-term employment with other employers is counted towards the duration of the respective job.

  • In addition, the respective employment may not be carried out professionally. This means that you are not allowed to make your main living with it.

  • Due to these restrictions, this form of payroll is mostly only used for vacation jobs, i.e. for schoolchildren and students, but sometimes also for retirees.

  • In the case of short-term employment, no deductions will be made from your gross earnings. Only the employer pays a flat tax of 25%.

Several jobs at the same time

  • If you have several jobs at the same time, be careful not to take on several short-term jobs. As soon as you come together for more than 50 working days, the jobs become subject to social security contributions and insurance contributions and wage tax are due.

  • If you want to run the holiday job on a mini-job basis, you have to make sure that you do not earn more than 400 euros per month. However, all mini-jobs are added together. This means that if you are already working on a part-time job on the basis of 400 euros and you earn more than 400 euros in both mini-jobs, both jobs will be subject to social security contributions.

So it is no problem to take a part-time job and a summer job at the same time. Make sure, however, that the part-time job is billed as a mini job or as a job subject to social insurance, then you can accept your holiday job as a short-term job.
