Sewing is called appliqué

  1. Since appliqués often have round and irregular shapes, you cannot avoid using stencils.
  2. Make a template out of cardboard or plastic film. This must be exactly the size of the future application, i.e. without seam allowances. If you want to iron over the template (see step four), cardboard is better than plastic.
  3. Use the template to transfer the shape onto the fabric and cut out your appliqué. If it is fabric that you would otherwise overcast while sewing, cut out with a seam allowance of six or a little more millimeters.
  4. Place the cut out appliqué on the template and iron the seam allowance around it. With spray starch you can additionally strengthen the ironed seam allowances.
  5. Now attach your applications to the base material, i.e. where the application should be. It can be done with pins or with a simple basting stitch.
  6. Then sew the whole thing with a fine zigzag stitch on your machine or by hand. Pay attention to the color of the thread, because this can be seen on the application.
  7. It is also possible that you iron the piece of fabric from which you want to cut the appliqué onto some iron-on fleece. Then draw the appliqué and cut directly without any seam allowance. The appliqué ironed onto the fleece is a little firmer than when you use the pure fabric. Try out what is more suitable for your purpose.
