A wrong throw-in in football is very rarely whistled. If the referee punishes this violation of the rules, it is usually very embarrassing for the executing player. To prevent this from happening to you, read here what you have to consider in the event of a throw-in.

The throw-in in football - a little rule of thumb

With a throw-in, the game is continued when the ball has passed completely over one of the two sidelines into what is known as the touch-out. That is why the throw-in is also one of the standard situations in terms of rules.

  • The due throw-in is then taken by a player belonging to the team that did not touch the ball last.
  • If the player throws the ball directly into the opponent's goal - if it is no longer touched by any other player - there is a goal kick for the opposing team.
  • If the player has thrown the ball directly into his own team's goal without touching another player, the opposing team receives a corner kick.
  • In addition, the offside rule is completely overridden in the event of a throw-in until a player has touched the ball. After that, the normal offside rule applies again.
  • Properly train defensive behavior in football

Regardless of whether you are in a back four or with a Libero, you are on the defensive when it comes to defensive behavior ...

  • In the case of a throw-in, the opposing players are not allowed to stand in front of the throwing-in player, but must stand at least two meters away so as not to prevent him from throwing in.
  • Also, the player throwing in may not violently throw at an opponent. Otherwise he is threatened with a warning or even a red card and the opponent receives a (direct) free kick. The attempt is also punishable.

No more false objection

When taking a throw-in, you should pay attention to the following rules or guidelines to avoid an incorrect throw-in:

  • First of all, you need to take the throw-in at the point where the ball completely crossed the sideline. The distance to the sideline is not specified, but there must be no external objects such as benches or curbs between you and the sideline.
  • You must also face the field of play and throw the ball over your head from behind with both hands. You have to make sure that you are throwing the ball and not just dropping it - otherwise it is a false throw-in.
  • When throwing the ball, both of your feet must be firmly on the ground and you must not be in the field of play. The sideline is not (yet) part of the field of play, so if you have one foot on the sideline, this is not a false throw-in.
  • Finally, after throwing it, you must not touch the ball again until another player has been on the ball. Otherwise there is an indirect free kick for the opposing team. For the other rule violations, there is a throw-in for the opposing team.
