The VAT share clearly shown

  • Public transport prices can vary from city to city. As a clear example, the capital Berlin is ideal, because there you have the choice between different means of transport. As an adult, you can use the bus and train for two hours with a normal single ticket.
  • You can use zones ABC for a gross price of 3.20 euros. This amount includes a VAT share of seven percent (Section 12 Para. 2 UStG). In detail, this price is made up of a ticket price of EUR 2.99 (net) and EUR 0.21 sales tax. The reduced rate also applies to all bus and train tickets up to a distance of 50 kilometers.
  • If you cover a longer distance by train or other public means of transport, 19 percent VAT is included in the ticket price (Section 12 Para. 1 UStG). This regulation applies to all buses, trains and taxis. For example, if you take the train from Stuttgart to Munich, the journey takes about two hours and you cover more than 50 kilometers. The ticket costs a total of 57 euros gross. The price is made up of EUR 47.90 net and EUR 9.10 (19 percent sales tax). All prices are from April 2014.

Public transport is taxed

Public transport in the form of buses and trains are good alternatives to a car and are kind to the environment. Due to higher fuel prices and other factors, the costs of buses and trains has increased over the years. Nevertheless, you can save costs in direct comparison to having your own car, do not have to worry about traffic and do something good for the environment. When it comes to tickets, it is not only the public transport operator who earns money, but also the state. VAT is always included in the costs, even if you won't notice it at first glance. In practice, however, there is no general flat rate for the value added tax use. Both the normal VAT rate and the reduced VAT rate are used.
