Buy a vignette for Austria
Are you planning a trip to or through Austria? If you want to drive on the motorway there, you should think about buying the appropriate vignette in good time.
The right vignette for Austria
- In Austria, a vignette is required on all motorways and expressways. All motor vehicles up to a total weight of 3.5 t as well as motorcycles require a “badge” - so-called in Austria. However, trailers do not require a separate vignette.
- Note that there are different vignettes. On the one hand, a general distinction can be made between vignettes for motor vehicles and for motorcycles.
- In addition, there are differentiations with regard to the period of validity.
- There are annual vignettes that are valid from January to December of the corresponding year.
- In contrast, with the two-month vignettes and the 10-day vignettes, the date for the start of validity can be freely selected. The vignettes are punched at the time of purchase so that the date can be read off. Depending on the variant, the vignettes are then valid for two months or Valid for 10 days.
- You have to stick the purchased vignettes on the inside of the windscreen of your vehicle. Make sure that the vignette is clearly visible.
- This principle also applies to motorcycles. In addition, the vignette must not be affixed in a place that could be easily replaced. Because your vignette is not transferable.

Where can you best buy the “badge”
- You can buy vignettes at all ADAC branches, for example. They are also sold by many petrol stations in the area near the border. There are also sales outlets at all major border crossings.
- Please note, however, that you must already have a vignette when entering the country by motorway. Excluded from this is currently (as of January 2011) only the section of the A 12 motorway (in Germany A 93) towards Innsbruck, between the border crossing and the first exit "Kufstein-Süd".
- For this reason, you should have a suitable vignette before entering the country.
- You should also take into account that there is an increased demand for vignettes during vacation periods. Time-consuming queues can then arise at the sales points for vignettes near the border.
- So for a stress-free trip you should think about buying the vignette early on. However, do not attach your vignette until immediately before departure, as it cannot be removed without being damaged.
