Winter is here, it has finally snowed, everyone around you is talking about skiing. Now you would like to finally try it yourself to stand on the boards and rush down the slope. But how can you do that? How do you even ski when you're a complete beginner? You can find the answer to this question here.

Preparation for skiing

  • First of all, you need good ski equipment that is adapted to your "ability". Please also note the safety precautions that you should take as a beginner. These include thick gloves, ski goggles, possibly a helmet and a back protector.
  • Before your first ski training session, wear your ski boots at home to get used to the rigid and constricting structure. This is necessary and serves to stabilize the ski, but it takes some getting used to at first.
  • Make yourself physically fit. If you ski, you have to have enough reserves, because skiing is very exhausting. This point is often underestimated by beginners.
  • Above all, train your thigh muscles, because wagging, a skiing technique with swings, puts a lot of strain on these muscles.

  • Find a downhill area with practice slopes for beginners, the so-called idiot hill. This is where you can start your first attempts at figuring out how to ski.

Visit to the slopes for beginners

  1. Get to the top of the exercise hill and stay calm. Watch out for a moment when not too many novice skiers are descending the hill at the same time to avoid a collision.
  2. If you are skiing for the first time, you should first take a snow plow down the hill to get a feel for the boards. To do this, stand on the slope with your front facing down the valley. Bend slightly on your knees and tilt the skis so that they form a "V" with the tip in front of you. This allows you to slowly slide down the slope by plowing the snow in front of you. This has a rather braking effect, so that you can slowly get used to the movement on the ski boards.
  3. In the 2nd Step try the parallel turn, with this technique every advanced skier can ski every slope and every mogul slope. To do this, take the skis parallel and do not drive straight down the slope, but at an angle. You must now practice changing direction. Your ski poles are now used. If you want to change direction to the left, then put the left ski pole on the ground and swing around it in the other direction. Here you also have to shift your weight, because the main weight is always on the downhill edge of the ski. So in this case you need to shift your weight from the left side to the right after the switch.
  4. The next time you change direction, proceed exactly the other way around and use the right ski pole.
  5. The more practice you have, the quicker you will be able to change direction, you will develop turns called "wagging". It's easy to drive and you can dare to approach the right ski slopes.

Dry runs for the ski slope

You can also practice the skiing process very well at home.

  1. To do this, take the ski position bent at your knees again, but please do not crouch move. Always look in the direction of travel.
  2. Shift your weight to one side without lifting your feet as if you were strapped to the ski boards and move your knees parallel in the same direction.
  3. Now carry out the movement in the other direction. In this way you train your elasticity and the movement is automated so that you can concentrate better on the other skiers on the ski slope so as not to collide with them.

This is how you ski on the slopes

  • As a beginner, you choose an easy slope and go to the top of the hilltop.
  • Take a deep breath and concentrate on your technique. Take your ski poles and push yourself off into the slope.
  • Perform waving movements in parallel turns, but always make sure that your ski boards do not cross each other. This can lead to a fall.

The best way to ski down the slope is of course to do the parallel turn. However, there is no shame in the fact that as a novice skier you step into the snow plow as soon as you become unsure. It is better to descend the slope slowly and safely than to risk a fall in a parallel turn.
