If you want to serve alcoholic beverages at an event, you need a serving permit. You can apply for this at the trade registration office of the respective municipality in whose area the event is to take place.

The serving license for a single event is issued as a permit. This is a restaurant permit, which is granted under simplified conditions for special occasions.

Apply for a serving license

  • You must submit the application for a serving license to the trade registration office of the responsible municipality.
  • When submitting your application, you must provide your personal data and, as a rule, provide information about the time and place of the event for which the serving license is being applied for.
  • If the event for which you are applying for a serving license is also organized and conducted by you, you need possibly further permits, for example if you need public street space to set up a marquee want.
  • Since the examination of your application can take some time, you should submit the application in good time before the event. However, about four weeks should be enough.

  • Administration fees are usually charged for processing the application, which can vary depending on the processing effort. In the city of Willich, for example, the fees are between 25 and 200 euros.

Also serve non-alcoholic drinks

  • If you only want to serve non-alcoholic drinks, you do not need a serving license, cf. § 2 para. 2 No. 1 Restaurant Act.
  • However, if you have been allowed to serve alcoholic beverages, you must offer your customers "also non-alcoholic beverages on request", cf. Section 6 Catering Act. It is according to § 6 Catering Act "to dispense at least one non-alcoholic drink not more expensive than the cheapest alcoholic drink". So if you sell beer for 1.80 euros per 0.2l glass, for example, then water or cola shouldn't be more expensive either. If you use other glasses with different sizes for this, you have to convert accordingly to the price per liter.
  • Should your application for a permit or If the serving license is rejected, you can proceed against it - depending on the federal state - with an objection or a lawsuit before the administrative court.

Applying for a serving license is not difficult, but you should do so well in advance of the event.
