From elementary school age onwards, there is basically nothing to prevent children from having their own television in their room. Opinions about this vary greatly, but as long as the child's television viewing does not get out of hand, but is consciously controlled, you can grant your child's wish. There are many devices that have parental controls. This is the kind of device you should choose for your child. You can switch this on when your child is allowed to watch TV and deactivate it when you do not want to.

How to activate the parental controls on the TV

When the child safety lock is activated, a television can no longer be operated. Different manufacturers implement this in different ways. Parental controls are very often associated with the remote control.

  1. Go to the menu on your TV. Depending on the model, you can activate the childproof lock under "Settings" or under "Security".
  2. Set a four-digit PIN. You will find the presetting in the operating instructions for your television set. Usually it is "0000" or "1234". Change this to a personal PIN. Then activate the child lock on the television with a "yes" or by setting the checkbox to "on".
  3. Turn the TV off and on again. Depending on the model, you have to enter the PIN or you can only switch on the device with the remote control if the PIN is activated. In this case, keep the remote control in a safe place.
  4. Start the channel scan - this is how it works

When you have a new television, there are usually no programs ...

Find a TV with parental controls

  • You can see from the product description or the operating instructions whether or not a television has parental controls. If you do not have both, you can also look in the menu of the television set.
  • When buying a new television, you can directly pay attention to this feature. It also makes sense to buy the television in the living room with a child lock so that the children do not fall back on it if they want to watch TV uncontrollably.

Of course, parental controls are not the only thing you should do to prevent your child from sitting uncontrollably in front of the TV. Rather, it is important that you teach your child other values as well. And you should be a good role model. Watch programs in a targeted manner and don't sit in front of the TV for hours, zapping from one channel to another. Older children adopt these behaviors very quickly.
