The touch of Japan - the Japanese ornamental cherry - is now blooming in many European gardens. The white and pink flowers look beautiful and light as a feather, even many kilometers from their Asian homeland. And if you are not familiar with this magnificent tree, you will of course wonder how to properly care for the Japanese ornamental cherry.

The Japanese ornamental cherry is very diverse in shape and size. You can get them in stores as small shrubs or as large trees. This wonderful tree does not make any great demands on the soil, despite its bloom. However, a humus-rich, slightly loamy soil is particularly advantageous.
- However, you should make sure that no waterlogging can occur, because wet soils promote diseases in the Japanese flowering cherry. If the soil is very loamy and firm, you should loosen it up again and again, especially after heavy rainfall.
- It is also worthwhile to take a soil sample from time to time to check the lime content of the soil, because an alkaline soil is good for Japanese ornamental cherries. Therefore, if the soil sample confirms too little lime, you should supply the soil with lime every 2 to 3 years. Ask your gardening dealer about suitable lime and proceed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- In terms of location, the Japanese cherry tree loves a sunny spot. It also thrives in partial shade. Many Japanese ornamental cherries are hardy and bloom in very early spring. Others, however, only in May / June. The ornamental cherry tree, which can grow between 3 to 7 m depending on the species, creates wonderful accents in the garden.
- The Japanese ornamental cherry can even be planted towards the house wall, in the relative vicinity of windows, because it loses its leaves in autumn / winter, it is light enough to let daylight into the room to let in. - In the case of an older, very large Japanese ornamental cherry, you can cut back to a branch in the spring so that the blossoms can expand again. You can recognize old branches by their darker color and their cracks. But be careful not to cut into the old wood.
In order not to damage the Japanese cherry tree when cutting, you should use high-quality, sharp loppers.
