Are you renting an apartment and want a cat? In any case, submit a written application to your landlord to keep cats so that your tenancy remains relaxed.

There is now a great deal of confusion about the law governing keeping cats in an apartment. Contrary to the opinion of many people, the purchase of a cat requires the consent of the landlord, if in rental contract it says that pets are not allowed. An application should therefore be made in writing.

Example for the formulation of an application to the landlord

  • After the polite form of address, you should indicate in the subject that you are applying to keep a cat. This means that it is immediately clear to the landlord what is on your mind.
  • If you have a regulation in the rental agreement that pets are not allowed, you should mention this regulation and point out that you are aware of this, but that you are making this application due to the good tenancy want.
  • You do not have to give a reason; however, this is recommended. As an example, it should be mentioned that you have been used to pets since childhood and would be happy if your landlord complies with this request.
  • Also point out in your letter that you are happy to have a good tenant-landlord relationship. Landlords like to hear this compliment.
  • Application for approval by the landlord: Dog ownership - this is how it works

If you want to take a dog into your family as a tenant in Germany, you need ...

  • If other tenants already have pets, this wording should not be included in the application. So the landlord feels under pressure.
  • When wording, make sure that the letter is formulated as a request and does not sound demanding.

Damage from keeping cats

  • It goes without saying that pets need to be educated, including cats. If you have decided to keep cats, you have to expect that an existing floor or wall covering may be damaged.
  • The costs of this damage are to be borne by you when moving out. You have a good chance that your application will be approved by the landlord if you make a note of this when submitting the application.
  • However, you can avoid damage to the apartment by opting for an older cat and also providing enough material for the cat to do with it.

If you have a good relationship with your landlord, applying for a cat ownership is not a problem, as long as you are clear express that you have dealt with the topic for a long time and any consequences to take.
