Considerations Before Buying

The different types of clay
- Clay differs primarily through its proportion of firebrick. This is the portion in the raw material that already consists of burnt particles.
- If you want to make decorative objects that consequently have nothing to fear in everyday life, then you should opt for earthenware clay. This is easy to work with because it is very fine. This comes about because it does without chamotte. Disadvantage: Even after firing, your product is still porous and only has a certain stability thanks to the subsequent glaze.
- If you want it to be more stable right from the start, use stoneware clay. This is already quite stable after firing even without the glaze. You can make vases or plates without worry and be sure that the material is completely leak-proof.
- There are also other mixed forms to buy, which are then referred to as special sizes. Here, the proportion of fireclay varies primarily, which affects the strength at the end, but also the severity of the processing. As a beginner, you should therefore rather use the familiar keys.
