If you operate the thermostat and the heating does not go out, this is usually only due to a stuck part inside the temperature controller. You can easily loosen this pin yourself with simple tools, provided it is a gas-powered radiator.

Take remedial action if the heating is on permanently

If you find that the temperature on a radiator can no longer be turned down, you often only need a hammer, a nail and flat-nosed pliers to fix it.

  1. Open the radiator valve. To do this, turn the temperature regulator as far as it will go after the highest heating level.
  2. In order to get to the likely stuck metal pin, it is necessary that you unscrew the temperature regulator. This step is possible without tools. When you have set the heating to the highest level, grasp the thermostat control by the grooved ring and turn it loosely. So you can lose weight in really easy. On some models, the controller is additionally secured with a screw that you have to loosen.
  3. You can now see that there is a valve pin behind the regulator. This pin is tucked in when the heater is off and visible when the heater is on. Since your heater will no longer turn off, it is very likely that the pen will no longer push in all the way in.

  5. Take a hammer and tap the metal pin gently. There is no need for brute force, the only point behind this process is to remove any metal shavings that may have accumulated over time.
  6. Now try to move the valve pin. You can do this by exerting pressure on the pen with a nail. You may be able to drizzle a little oil on the pen to make it run smoothly again.
  7. When the pin moves and pushes in again, screw the thermostat knob back on. Make sure that the mark is on top.
  8. In the last step, turn off the heating completely. Wait an hour, now the heater should be cold.

If the radiator does not go out - change the valve

In some cases the valve pin gets stuck in the housing and can no longer be pulled out. The purpose of the pen is to turn the cone seat on and off. If the valve pin cannot be loosened using the method described above, the valve must be replaced. You can also do this on your own without any problems:

  1. Valves for different radiators are available from hardware stores. Pay attention to the same make. The cost of a new valve is usually less than ten euros.
  2. Stop that water from the heater. To do this, proceed as when venting the radiator, but wait until no more water comes out.
  3. Loosen the old valve. As there is still some water behind the valve, it is advisable to have a cloth ready.
  4. Loosen and remove all remains of the seal. You can leave the thread of the old valve on the heater because the new valve matches the thread.
  5. Screw on the new valve and seal it. To do this, use hemp and paste, which you can get at the hardware store.
  6. Refill the water in the heater. The radiator should now heat up and regulate again without any problems.

If the heating does not go out - tips

  • If you suspect that the valve pin may have gotten stuck in the thermostat regulator, it is also possible that you are gently tapping on and around the regulator with a hammer. In some cases, you can already loosen the sticking pin.
  • If you are unsure or if you do not trust yourself to replace the thermostat regulator, you should seek the advice of a specialist. In rented apartments in particular, it makes sense to hire the caretaker or property manager to fix the problem. In this way you can avoid problems with your landlord.
