Maternity Allowance - Help and Protection for Pregnant Women

  • In Germany, expectant mothers are under special protection thanks to the maternity protection laws. With its application for maternity benefit, the DAK offers the possibility of receiving financial help.
  • The expectant mother has financial security as soon as she goes on maternity leave, which begins six weeks before the presumed childbirth and ends eight weeks after the childbirth. In the case of multiple and premature births, the deadline is extended to twelve weeks.
  • Only expectant mothers who have health insurance themselves and are neither paid nor entitled to sick pay can apply for the money.
  • The amount of the money is calculated based on the average net earnings - but may not exceed € 13 per day. The employer pays the resulting difference to your usual wage. However, this only applies to the first child. If the second child is born during parental leave, the employer does not have to pay this difference. Instead, she pays Health insurance an increased daily rate.
