VIDEO: Calculation path for a division

If you follow the basic rules of division, the calculation is very simple. With the written division, you can also solve complex tasks very quickly.

Basic rules of division

  • In contrast to multiplication problems, division problems cannot be interchanged. You can swap 4 times 5 because the result of 5 times 4 is the same. But 20: 5 is not the same as 5:20.
  • Furthermore, the result of zero divided by any number is always zero. The calculation method for division by zero (for example 50: 0) is not possible and must not be calculated. Here the result is always "not solvable".

Calculation method of the written division

The calculation method can best be illustrated with an example:

  1. The task is for example: 315: 3. The calculation is then carried out as follows: Write the task on a piece of paper. The first line then says 315: 3 =.
  2. Calculate in writing divided - this is how it works

How did that work again? Calculate in writing divided, that came in the ...

  3. The first thing you should do is calculate the division of 3: 3. You write the result 1 after the "equals" (=) in the first line. Now the reversal task takes place. To do this, the result (1) is calculated times the first number by which you previously divided (3). Write this result under the 3 of 315.
  4. Draw a line under the 3 and subtract the numbers. Write the result (0) under the line. Now pull the second number (1) down and write it next to the 0.
  5. Since 1: 3 cannot be calculated with a whole number as a result, a 0 is written next to the 1. Next add the 5. Now do the math 15: 3 and write the result (5) at the top after the 0.
  6. Now the inversion problem follows again (5 times 3 = 15). Now write the 15 again under the other 15 and subtract the two numbers again. Since the result is 0, the written division is finished. Underline the result (105).

Note that when calculating a division with "remainder", this "remainder" is marked with an "R". For example, if the problem is 316: 3, the result when calculating with whole is Counting 105 R 1.
