Lay concrete paving slabs

Concrete is one of the inexpensive and robust materials. That is why sidewalks are often equipped with concrete slabs. They are used particularly in the design of gardens, parks and other green spaces. Concrete pavement slabs also lead across boulevards, terraces and sidewalks along the street. If you want to lay concrete paving slabs yourself, there are a few things to consider.

Pay attention to work safety when handling heavy paving slabs

Concrete paving slabs are very heavy. You need a truck for transport. When laying, you should wear gloves and work safety shoes with steel toecaps because the weight of the pavement slabs poses a risk of injury.

  1. Before laying concrete paving slabs, you need to thoroughly measure and stake out the area. A gradient of one to two percent must be taken into account.
  2. Now excavate the staked area so that a trench about 25 centimeters deep is created.
  3. The bed in which the concrete pavement slabs are laid must be protected against frost.
  4. Therefore, the old rule also applies here, which says that when the trench is filled with coarse building material, such as screed, one starts and finishes with fine material.
  5. Laying exposed aggregate concrete slabs - instructions

Laying exposed aggregate concrete slabs is not that difficult. With instructions and ...

  6. The bottom layer therefore consists of screed. Make sure that the screed is sufficiently compacted. Finally, the layer is peeled off so that a smooth surface is created.
  7. Another layer is made up of finer gravel. Proceed with it in the same way as with the screed.
  8. The concrete pavement slabs are laid in a bed of sand. This is the top and at the same time the finest layer.

Pay attention to evenness when laying concrete

  1. When laying the concrete pavement slabs, you have to level out the sand again and again so that all pavement slabs are laid uniformly, taking into account the slope. Use a spirit level to check.
  2. Work your way from back to front. The distance between the joints of the pavement slabs should be as uniform as possible. It is a few millimeters.
  3. Finally, sweep sand between the individual joints. Do this until the joints are filled.
  4. Then the concrete pavement slabs have been laid.
