Would you like to paint over or spray over acrylic varnish with synthetic resin varnish? Then read here what to look out for.

Many DIY enthusiasts keep complaining about problems with the combination of synthetic resin varnish and acrylic varnish. It is usually quite possible to combine both paints or at least to replace one with the other. If you want to paint over acrylic varnish with synthetic resin varnish, it is first of all important whether the acrylic layer is old and with a colored synthetic resin varnish simply want to create a new layer of paint, or whether you want to use a synthetic resin-based clear varnish to cover an object painted with acrylic varnish fix.

Renew the old layer of paint with synthetic resin varnish

  • The first variant is often the case with older garden furniture, but also with vehicles such as mopeds. The old layer of paint is simply no longer beautiful and should be painted over or sprayed over with a new one. Unfortunately, the combination of acrylic varnish and synthetic resin varnish can quickly lead to unsightly dents and other marks.
  • Therefore, if you want to be on the safe side, you should thoroughly sand off the old coat of paint before applying the new coat.
  • If you want to save yourself this huge amount of effort, you can also work with a so-called epoxy resin filler, especially for vehicles. This is applied as an intermediate layer on the old paint. You can get epoxy resin fillers in hardware stores or in Internet.

Fix acrylic varnish with synthetic resin clear varnish

  • This variant is about protecting the acrylic layer from the weather with a layer of synthetic resin varnish. When you use newer paints, there is really only one factor that matters: proper drying.

  • If you paint or spray an object with acrylic varnish, it takes up to three weeks for the paint layer to dry out properly. Don't be fooled if the paint starts to feel solid after hours or days. It only develops its full stability after a certain period of time.
  • When the paint is dry, you can easily paint over it with synthetic resin varnish - it is now stable and no longer susceptible to attack. Paint spray now also works of course.
