Install the odor trap in the downpipe

Wastewater always creates a film of fat and other residues in the pipe system. After a while, when the decomposition process has progressed, an unpleasant smell becomes noticeable from the sewage tract. Its spread can also be effectively prevented with an odor trap in the downpipe.

How the downpipe comes to an odor trap

Normally, roof drainage should lead into the channel for surface water that is not or very little contaminated with substances that spread odors. If there is a lot of smell from your downpipe, it is probably because this requirement is not met. Now you don't have to put up with it, you can turn it off with a corresponding effort.

  1. The simplest solution is to install an industrially manufactured odor trap. A solid stainless steel version can hardly be had for less than € 50, but it outlasts some guttering. The technology is simple and maintenance-free, and largely frost-proof.
  2. Pay attention to the correct dimensions for the existing downpipe. Additional adapters or transition pieces add to the cost. Constrictions are also always a source of interference if there is a lot of water or if foreign bodies are caught in the pipe.
  3. Saw off the size of the odor trap - minus 10 cm - from the downpipe above the inlet, then loosen the next clamp so that the downpipe can be pushed to the side. Slide the odor trap in the direction indicated over the upper piece of pipe and then swivel the whole thing back into its normal position so that you can now slide the odor trap down into the downpipe can. The operation is completed when the clamp is attached.
  4. An alternative is to wall a small shaft above the drainage pipe. The sewer pipe must stand higher than the inlet pipe ends in order to create a siphon effect. Since there is then always water in the shaft, frost protection must be provided.
  5. Gutter overflows, what to do?

You have noticed that rain is no longer running down the gutter and you are asking ...
