The use of the voltage tester

Voltage testers are available in different versions. They are intended to contribute to occupational safety by enabling cables and sockets to be checked for their correct connection.

  • Before using it, you should generally read the operating instructions for the voltage tester. There are differences in operation from device to device.
  • In particular, the voltage range should be set correctly to avoid damage to the device. In this regard, you should absolutely observe the relevant setting instructions in the operating instructions.
  • As a rule, when testing voltages at mains sockets, the measuring range with the highest dielectric strength is selected.
  • The voltage tester usually has two measuring points. These are held in the two holes of the socket which is to be checked.
  • L and N for electricity - this is how to connect the cables correctly

For safety, it is very important that power cables are always correctly connected ...

  • It is essential that you hold the device in such a way that you cannot come into contact with the metal parts of the voltage tester.
  • Depending on the design of the device, either a measuring instrument or a several light-emitting diodes light up to indicate that voltage is being applied to the socket. If this is not the case, the measured socket is not live.
  • Some voltage testers also have a function with which cables can be checked for electrical continuity. For this purpose, a voltage source built into the device is used to send a measuring current through the line to be measured. Do not use this function for measurements on live parts or lines.
