Imitation of Dolce Gusto capsules?

The problem with all machines with capsules is that they cannot be copied as easily as pads. Dolce Gusto is no exception. But you can hope for cheap coffee cups.

Counterfeit capsules are an exception.
Counterfeit capsules are an exception.

Principle of the Dolce Gusto machine

  • In terms of structure, the machines and capsules from the various providers do not differ. These are hermetically sealed capsules, usually made of aluminum, in which a small amount of coffee powder and, depending on the type, milk and sugar are enclosed.
  • The capsules are placed in a Dolce Gusto chamber. There the lid is pierced. Pressure is now built up in the machine, which continues into the capsule.
  • As soon as the pressure has reached a certain level, the capsule opens on the underside and the drink is pressed out through a sieve located in the capsule.
  • Since the manufacturers have different formats for the capsules and there are other differences, it is usually not possible to use the capsules for different systems.
  • Dolce Gusto and Nespresso are made by the same manufacturer, but that does not mean that you can use the capsule in both systems. The capsules from Dolce Gusto are usually significantly cheaper than those from Nespresso.
  • Discard Nespresso capsules

Basic information on counterfeit capsules

  • The system is protected by a patent. It has been shown, however, that this cannot prevent counterfeit products from being offered. There are imitation capsules from other manufacturers for the Nespresso machines.
  • Since the patents have to be bypassed technically, unless the protection has expired, a great deal of effort is required if a company wants to bring counterfeit capsules onto the market. This is only worthwhile if the originals are very expensive and the machines are widely available.
  • The manufacturers of the originals can counteract this by also offering their capsules cheaper. You can therefore expect that the small portions in the colorful jars will be cheaper.
  • Overall, however, buying coffee in packs that contain individual servings is always an expensive pleasure. The aluminum boxes are also very elaborately designed with a sieve inside, which you cannot compare with a pad made of paper. The complex systems do not come close to the price of pads.
