Convert milliamps to amps

In physics lessons at the latest, every student is confronted with a wide variety of units. This also includes amps, the unit of amperage. But how do you convert amps to milliamps and vice versa?

That's one milliamp

Ampere is the SI unit for electrical current. So a milliampere is a thousandth of that.

  • The name comes from André-Marie Ampère, a French physicist and mathematician. Among other things, he dealt with electrodynamics and invented the principle of electrical telegraphy.
  • The definition of an ampere can be traced back to the magnetic effect of the electric current. 1 ampere corresponds exactly to the strength at which a temporally constant electrical current generates a force of 2 * 10-7 Newton between two conductors 1 meter apart. The conductors should have a circular cross-section, be infinitely long and be in a vacuum.
  • Since infinitely long conductors cannot be realized in practice, there is a lot of theory in this definition. This high theoretical proportion makes the ampere the most inexact SI unit.

The symbol for amps is A. This is expanded depending on the factor. In the case of milliamps, the symbol would be mA

In physics, units such as volts,... are used for different quantities.

This is how you convert the unit into amperes

As mentioned above, milliamps and amps differ only by a factor of a thousand. So you can convert the units quickly and easily.

  1. Milliamps to amps: This simply requires dividing the milliamps by thousands. So if you have 100 mA for example, divide that by a thousand and get 0.1 mA.
  2. Amps to milliamps: In this case, you just need to do the opposite. Assuming you have 1 A and want to convert it to milliamps, multiply the 1 A by a factor of 1000. 1 A corresponds to 1000 mA.

This does not only apply to amperes, any unit can be converted from milli to the basic unit.
