Competition submissions - why regulations are so important

Every competition, whether in the arts, music or literature, has certain competition regulations. As a rule, the type of submission, often also the age and place of residence of the participants as well as the scope of the submission, are determined there. But that's not all. A date will be set by which the competition entry must have been received by the jury or the preliminary jury. This is so important so that all participants have the same chance or the same time to work on their competition entry. But where are the differences between "postmark applies" and a "simple" deadline?

If the postmark is valid, you have more time

  • "The postmark applies" - this addition can be read in most of the announcements for competitions. But what does it mean? Actually, this designation is very simple and says what it says literally: The postmark applies. This means that if the deadline for submission is, for example, 03/05/2013 and there is a postmark behind it, then all you have to do is ensure that your entry is submitted by 03/05/2013. gets a stamp at the post office.
  • If the addition is not at the entry deadline, this means that the contribution will be submitted by 05.03. must be available to the jury - regardless of the postmark. You must therefore submit your submission no later than two days earlier than if the postmark would apply.
  • As a rule, however, the competitions still have a waiting period of one day - that means, you should have a postmark dated 06.03. then your contribution still counts, because the mistake can also be made by Swiss Post. However, you cannot rely on that 100%. It is always better to follow the guidelines correctly.
  • If only one submission deadline is noted in the advertisement, then it is usually the case that the postmark is still meant here, even if this was not explicitly noted.
