Is your bookshelf bursting at the seams? Then share the fate of many book lovers. Take action before your shelf collapses.

A library is constantly being worked on

  • A library lives from the fact that content and titles can be found. New books deserve to be given a proper place on the bookshelf. If the space is occupied or overcrowded, clearing it is not fun. You will not be able to avoid cleaning out and updating your home bookshelf on a regular basis.
  • Make yourself aware that books are special, but that they are not permanently related to many titles. Only valuable, personally important titles and those that you may need for your work remain in the repertoire.

Printed paper is also ephemeral

  • Check your school literature, which may still last over time. Much of it is completely out of date. Just keep the books from your school days that you have a specific memory of or that can still be used as reference books.
  • Sort out everything that has lost its relevance over the years. Much of it not only looks antiquated, but is actually outdated due to the development of knowledge. There is a high probability that you will not go back to it. Many of these titles may have already been replaced by current titles.

Use the second row on the bookshelf

  • Banish less important titles, especially trivial literature and unimportant novels, which you might find too good to throw away, to the back row of the bookshelf. This creates space in the front row.
  • You do not necessarily need world literature, standard works by well-known authors, encyclopedias and contemporary history works every day. Place them in the upper rows, i.e. where you cannot easily access them directly. Literature that you need every day or more often belongs at eye level.
  • Ideally, you should organize your book collection thematically. Information titles, for example relating to gardening or travel literature, are grouped together.
  • Organize books that you keep for your descendants for historical or personal reasons want, where they will not be forgotten, but where they can be accessed when needed. Make sure that the books are not accessible to toddlers and your dog. Many works have already been destroyed in this way.
