What you need:

  • Roofing material according to type of construction
  • Tools suitable for the roofing material
  • Ladder (as large and foldable as possible)
  • Possibly. new add-on parts such as decorative panels, gutter, etc.

What material is your garden shed roof made of?

  • Before you because of a defective roof or because of your unsightly Garden shed-Recover the roof, first check which roofing material is involved. This essentially depends on how the roof structure is built and what effort you have to make for the renewal.
  • For sanded bitumen roofing felt and PVC sheeting, a stable, continuous wooden soffit is the rule as a base layer.
  • If the roof has been leaking for a long time, the wood covering will probably also have to be replaced - at least in part. Otherwise, leave all the roofing material behind and simply work the new roof waterproofing over it.
  • For old asbestos cement panels, it would be best to remove them, but older versions are considered hazardous waste.
  • In the case of tile roofing, the battens are usually renewed in order to offer the new roof tiles optimal support. When renewing sheet metal roofs or PVC molded panels, the old roof covering must be completely removed. The substructure is not changed - here, too, the battens underneath are mostly renewed.
  • Protect garden houses from wind and weather - this is how it works

Choose functional roofing material for the cottage

  • Often the decorative panels and attachments exposed to the weather are weathered, soaked or defective. In addition, the paint is peeling and is unsightly or moldy. Here you have the chance to change one or the other detail and let the garden house shine in a completely new light. So either to make new parts from wood yourself or finished parts according to the size, etc. adapt. Sheet metal or PVC components are more difficult to process and usually require special tools. It is best to go to the local roofer and have the parts made to fit by him. Ready-made plastic or sheet metal add-on parts are also offered for real bricks.

Re-covering the garden shed roof requires manual skills

  • If you "only" have to work over the existing roof covering, first check the entire roof for protruding components such as B. Screws, nails, etc. You remove these as well as all attachments.
  • If you use the same new material, you do not need to pay attention to material incompatibilities. It is different if you use PVC foil instead of bitumen sheeting or vice versa. The two materials do not like each other and must be kept away from each other with separating fleece material.
  • Sheet metal or PVC sheets are relatively easy to process. PVC film is a little more difficult to make connections and connections, but it is still easy to handle with manual skills. Of course, follow all processing instructions from the manufacturer and obtain instructions that match the material. Some special tools are required for all roof coverings. Ask your neighbors about tools and borrow expensive equipment if possible. Hot air tools, special scissors and other things can be really expensive and not worth buying because they are used far too seldom.

Better not to experiment with roofing

  • You can easily mount sheet metal profile or PVC shaped plates over bitumen or PVC foils. There are special screws and spacers for both panel materials that are simply screwed into the battens or the wooden sub-roof. Pay attention to the load-bearing capacity of the roof - it often just bears the so-called snow load (approx. 50 kg / m²) and you can only "step on" the roof while lying down.
  • You nail bitumen sheeting such as PVC foils directly onto the roof with a separating fleece in between. You start from the eaves (where the rainwater drips off or the gutter hangs) and nail the roofing membrane across the ridge. This is how you work your way up, lane by lane. The next row of nails is covered by the next roofing membrane and then glued (bitumen membrane) or, in the case of PVC film, welded.
  •  PVC is much easier to "stick" with a hot air blower than with solvents - you better keep your fingers off the latter. Alternatively, it is also possible to lay the lengthways membrane, but this is not so reliable for the tightness.
  • However, it is better to leave both working with an open flame and overly complicated roof constructions or green roofs to a specialist. Wherever foil or sheet has to be attached to the edges of the garden shed, special care and strict adherence to the instructions is essential. This is where most of the momentous mistakes are made.
  • Pay attention to where the rainwater comes from and that it can be easily drained away without getting into the house. However, decorative parts are often acceptable "victims" of a more beautiful look and have to be renewed or at least repainted from time to time. And since the roof is now shining in a new light, you might want to give the garden shed a nice new coat of paint right away.
