As the sun warms the earth, water evaporates from forests and bodies of water. If the water vapor rises in high layers of air, which are colder, it turns back into water droplets. Visible clouds then arise from large collections of these water droplets. There are many different types of clouds that indicate the prevailing weather conditions and the development of the weather.

• The different types of clouds occur at different heights.
• Clouds in the upper air layers consist of ice crystals. Because they are located about 10 to 12 kilometers above the earth's surface, where it is bitterly cold with temperatures down to minus 40 degrees Celsius. These so-called "high clouds" look very delicate and are therefore called veil and feather clouds. However, no precipitation is to be expected from these clouds.

• The "medium clouds" include those clouds that are approximately 5 to 9 kilometers above the surface of the earth. They are called heap or fair-weather clouds, because although they consist of countless water droplets, most of the time there is no precipitation from them either.
• "Low clouds" are located 300 meters to 2 kilometers above the ground, but can also sink close to the ground because they are extremely large and heavy. These rain clouds can pile up almost everywhere and become very dark. Depending on the season, either rain or snow falls from them.

• Cloud formation is only possible through the warmth of the sun. Because it ensures the evaporation of the water, which can then rise to higher spheres as water vapor.
• Depending on the heights at which many water droplets come together, the different types of clouds are created there.
• The water droplets or ice crystals of the clouds in the higher air layers are so light that they are carried in the air by the winds, so that they are obviously floating.
