What is blood or plasma donation actually good for?

Donations of blood, plasma or other blood components are generally voluntary and free of charge in Germany. However, according to Section 10 of the Transfusion Act, financial compensation can be granted for each donation.

How much money can you get per donation?
An expense allowance of between 20 and 40 euros is usual. If you donate platelets, the compensation may be higher.

How often can I donate?
You can donate plasma much more often than donate blood. It should be noted that you should have donated blood at least once before donating plasma in order to be able to assess for yourself whether you generally tolerate a donation well. Plasma can be donated a maximum of sixty times a year. There should be at least two calendar days between two donations.
When it comes to whole blood donations, men are allowed to donate six times a year and women are only allowed to donate four times a year. There should be a gap of at least eight, preferably twelve weeks between whole blood donations and the next whole blood donation. Because of menstruation, women have more time to regenerate than men.
