If you want to make your own bathroom barrier-free, you can apply for funding from the KfW. This can be in the form of a grant or a loan. Not only is the bathroom renovation in your own home supported, you can also apply for support for renovation in the rented apartment. But how much is the funding and what requirements have to be met?
KfW grants for accessibility in the bathroom
Anyone who can renovate their bathroom from their own resources and no one for this credit can apply for a subsidy from the KfW. The KfW program 455-B sees a subsidy of 10 percent of those eligible Cost for the investment. Eligible for funding are costs that arise to make the bathroom barrier-free. These costs have an upper limit of €25,000, so that a maximum of €2,500 in funding is possible. However, if a subsidy of less than €200 is calculated, this will not be paid out.
Another alternative is funding for an age-appropriate house. In this program, grants amounting to 12.5 percent of eligible investments can be applied for at the KfW bank. In this case, subsidies of a maximum of €6250 are possible with an investment volume of max. 50.000 €.
It is important that the subsidy is applied for before the start of the renovation and that no renovation contract has been concluded when the application is made. In order to cover possible increases in costs, these should be planned for when applying for a subsidy. These can be up to approx. 20 percent increase on the offers already received.
The KfW promotional loan for a barrier-free bathroom
Property owners who want to make their bathroom barrier-free can apply for a promotional loan from KfW for the full investment amount of eligible costs. This is also granted for ancillary construction costs, such as consulting or planning services. A maximum loan amount of €50,000 is provided in program 159 of age-appropriate conversions. You can apply for this at your house bank before you start the renovation.
Technical requirements of KfW for funding bathroom renovation

With regard to the technical equipment of the pool, the following requirements must be met:
- The bathroom size must be at least 1.80 by 2.20 meters. If the bathroom is smaller, there must be a free movement area of at least 1.20 m deep and 0.9 m wide in front of the individual sanitary bathroom objects. The distance between individual objects must also be at least 0.25 m.
- During the renovation, a walk-in shower must be planned, which is equipped with a non-slip floor covering. If the shower cannot be installed at ground level, it may be no more than 2 cm lower than the bathroom floor. The transition to the floor should then be designed as a smooth transition and not as a step.
- The sink must be at least 48 cm deep. The washbasin must also be freely designed in the knee area so that it can also be used when sitting.
- The toilet must either already be installed at the required height for the user or it must be height-adjustable.
- The entry height of the bathtub must not exceed 50 cm. Alternatively, a side door can be attached for boarding or a lift system can be installed.
Combination of subsidies for bathroom renovation
The KfW grants can be combined with other grants from public authorities. These must also be applied for before the bathroom renovation begins. Only a direct combination with grants from the long-term care insurance fund is not possible.
