What is chlamydia?

  • Chlamydia are bacteria. They stand out because they are smaller than other types of bacteria.
  • In addition, they can only reproduce inside host cells because they lack the bacterial wall. As a result, they cannot synthesize their own energy and are dependent on energy from the host cells.

What diseases do they cause?

  • Various types of chlamydia are important in medicine. They can cause pneumonia, conjunctivitis and corneal inflammation. Most significant, however, are the inflammations of the genitals and internal genital organs. The pathogens are transmitted from one person to another through unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • Most infections are asymptomatic and therein lies their danger. Because people do not know that they are ill, they cannot be treated adequately and the infection can become chronic. In women, chlamydia causes inflammation of the urethra, cervix and uterus. Ascending infections can inflame the ovaries and fallopian tubes. If adhesions occur here, infertility or ectopic pregnancies follow in the woman.
  • The bacteria cause urethritis, epididymitis and prostatitis in men. In men, the infections are otherwise rather unproblematic.
  • When does chlamydia go away after treatment?

Testing in men - how it works

  • Although subclinical infections do not lead to infertility in men, there is a risk that the infected man can infect his sexual partners. If the woman is infected, it is also important for the man to be tested to determine whether he has become infected.
  • To run a test, you just have to urine removed or a coat of paint removed from the urethra. When urinating, take the first urine, not the middle stream.
  • The bacteria are not cultivated from the sample material, as this is not possible with chlamydia. An EIA is made from the material or the genetic material is produced using a PCR. The examination can be carried out by a dermatologist or urologist.
