Symbiosis is the mutual relationship between organisms

  • Basically, symbiosis can be understood as the mutual benefit of two living beings that live directly or indirectly with each other. Often this happens completely unnoticed and the so-called host does not know anything about his or her symbiont. Basically, symbiosis is not a bad thing, because the respective organisms that live in a symbiotic relationship each enjoy special advantages that would not exist without this "bond".
  • Symbiosis is usually to be distinguished from parasitism, in which only one life form takes advantage of the infestation of your chosen host animal. Parasites often damage these animals considerably, which should not be the case in the normal course of a symbiosis.

The ubiquity of symbiosis

  • As already mentioned, in most cases symbionts are not noticed by their host animals. Humans are also home to numerous inhabitants that are vital to them, for example bacteria that are essential for breaking down the food they eat. In return, humans provide them with the necessary and extremely beneficial habitat. Even if it seems strange to many, survival would not be possible without these tiny animals.
  • However, there are also symbiotic relationships that are not based on the immediate habitation of the host body and do not take place in its vicinity. This form of symbiosis can also function over certain distances and is represented, among other things, by bees and other insects that pollinate plants.
  • However, one also speaks of a symbiosis when a reciprocal relationship between two organisms is advantageous but not absolutely necessary. It is also a symbiotic relationship when one species defends the other from predators or cleans the surface of the other's body. The "reward" often appears in access to certain food sources.
