Concrete is made from cement, sand and water. During production, attention must always be paid to the correct mixing ratio between all components. But it's not as difficult as many people fear.

How to make concrete with the right mixing ratio

In most cases, the concrete is mixed in a concrete mixer. All you have to do is fill the machine with cement, sand and water. Of course, you have to fill in these three components in the correct mixing ratio.

  • The most common mixing ratio for concrete is 1:4. That means four parts of sand for every part of cement. In the case of particularly heavily stressed concrete, the mixing ratio can also be 1:3. But that only happens in exceptional cases.
  • First fill four shovels of sand into a commercially available concrete mixer with a capacity of 160 liters. After that comes a shovel of cement. You can then repeat this three times.
  • The water is only filled into the mixing machine at the end. As a rule, 10 liters of water are sufficient for the above quantity. But that is also very much dependent on the moisture of the sand. Therefore, you should not fill in the entire amount of water at once.

  • However, how much water you need to add also depends on what you intend to use the concrete for. If the concrete is to be poured, it can be a little thinner. That means you should add a little more water.
  • Concrete, which is needed for masonry, should be a little thicker. This makes it easier to process. In order to achieve the required consistency, you should therefore gradually increase the mixing ratio between the cement-sand mixture and the water.
