The demographic change in Germany

When speaking of demographic change, there are two terms that are directly related to it, namely urban and rural exodus.

  • Urban exodus was a phenomenon of the 1960s and 1970s. In these decades, due to the economic miracle, more and more people moved to the country or at least to the suburban areas in order to build their own homes cheaply. Afterwards, rents in the cities fell noticeably.
  • The rural exodus describes the exact opposite, especially since reunification in 1989. In this case, young people in particular are drawn to large cities due to a lack of prospects, and the rural population is getting older and older. This goes so far that entire villages "die out", so to speak.

Women - the majority in the city, the minority in the countryside

  • Nowadays there are far more men than women in the country. In the east of the republic in particular, this phenomenon has become a problem, as the situation is sometimes very unbalanced. In some places over 70% of the residents are male.
  • The reason can be found in the fact that the educational opportunities for girls and women have improved significantly and they no longer want to fit into the stereotypical image of the "woman at the stove".
  • Reasons for unequal population distribution

  • In addition, many young men take over their parents' farms, while young women prefer to pursue an apprenticeship in the city.

There will be more men here in the future

  • The percentage of in Germany living men is about 48, that of women consequently about 52. This varies from year to year, but in fact there are more women than men. As already described, in the future there will be even more men in rural areas and more women in big cities.
  • Another reason why there are more men is that more men emigrate than women do: Almost 70 percent of all people who leave Germany are young, well-educated men. This will also lead to a greater shortage of skilled workers in the future.
