VIDEO: Making paper transparent

instagram viewer

You probably know that - an important document or a business letter is on the dining table or the kitchen counter and somehow a grease stain ends up on it. Immediately the paper becomes slightly translucent and unsightly at the point of the stain. You can use this effect to create great effects.

Making paper transparent - this is how it works with oil

  1. Get commercially available cooking oil from the supermarket. Whether you use rapeseed, sunflower or olive oil does not matter for this technique.
  2. Put a dash of oil in a small bowl. Make sure to use a mat to protect your table from the cooking oil. Newsprint is only suitable to a limited extent in this case, as the oil loosens the printing ink from the newsprint and could then be printed on your paper. This can achieve great effects, but you may not want it so much.
  3. Now apply the oil to your paper with a clean baking or painting brush. No puddles should form on the paper. Make sure to distribute the oil nicely evenly.
  4. You can now see how your paper begins to become translucent.
  5. Painting with wax - the basic encaustic technique works like this

Fantastic structures and bright colors - you can achieve that with the encaustic. …

  6. When the paper has been brushed properly, you should dab it with some kitchen paper and then place it on kitchen paper to dry. Every now and then, suck up excess oil from the paper with a little kitchen roll.

What you should be aware of - further information

  • Caution! Paper treated in this way has an increased flammability. Under no circumstances use it to fold lanterns or the like and keep it away from open flames or strong heat sources.
  • During further processing, please also consider that this paper may no longer be glued so well with normal glue. Try different adhesives and use the stapler in an emergency.
  • You can also achieve very nice effects by oiling painted paper. For example, you can cut out a painted mandala and brush it with oil. After drying, you have a great window picture. The oil gives the crayon colors a completely new luminosity.

Have fun trying out this great technique!
