Basic characteristics of cats

In order to be able to draw cats, you should first familiarize yourself with some basic anatomical features. Knowing these will make it easier for you to model these animals with your drawing utensils:

  • The ears of cats are always very pointed and stand upright at a small distance from the head (no hanging ears).
  • Cats have short snouts with a poorly defined nose. As a result, they correspond to the so-called child scheme and look very cute. The overall shape of the head looks rounded and the nose looks like a small triangle.
  • Another distinctive feature are the thick, long whiskers.
  • Cats have elongated eyes that taper to a point. These so-called cat eyes are also characterized by narrow pupils.

How to draw your pet

If you are working from a template, you should first transfer the outlines using a grid (this will help you with orientation).

  1. In general, you should always start by drawing the cat's outer lines on the paper. This will allow you to see the proportions and then move on to the subtleties.
  2. In the next step, draw the cat's eyes. Start with the darkest area (pupils) and work your way up to the lightest area. Draw the fine structures of the eye and work with shading by blurring certain areas in your image.
  3. Finally, draw the structure of the fur and work out the face with the help of light-dark contrasts. Then draw the whiskers on the cat's snout.
