VIDEO: Make a lantern with paper mache and a balloon

Especially in autumn, children need a lantern - if only because of the Martin move. Take advantage of the bad autumn weather to make a great lantern with your child from a balloon and paper mache from scraps of newspaper.

A paper mache lantern and balloon - that's how it works

  1. As the basic structure for your lantern, blow the balloon to the desired size. Please note that the lantern is only about 2/3 the size of the balloon. Close the balloon tightly with the string.
  2. Mix the wallpaper paste according to the instructions on the package and let it swell for the necessary time so that it reaches its full adhesive strength.
  3. Tear up (or let your child tear) the newspaper into snippets - these can be irregular, you won't see them later anyway.
  4. Now coat the balloon relatively thickly with wallpaper paste and lay the newspaper clippings in one layer, so that all parts of the balloon are covered (this is a very simple type of paper mache and good for children's hands suitable). Now hang up the balloon and let it dry out thoroughly. Repeat this step about 5 - 8 times, depending on how thick you want the paper mache layer to be.

  6. When you have reached the desired thickness of your lantern, finally glue on a layer of tissue paper and let the lantern dry well again.
  7. Now use the cutter to cut off a third of the lantern (the side where the thread is) and remove the balloon.
  8. Now prime the lantern in a base color and let the color dry. In order for your lantern to be a lantern, light must of course shine through. Draw rough, straightforward patterns in pencil (e.g. B. Hearts or Stars) and carefully cut them out with the cutter. Now cover these holes from the inside with colored tracing paper.
  9. Decorate the outside of the lantern with acrylic paints as you wish.
  10. Take the lantern bracket and mark the holes on the lantern where you want it to sit and poke the holes with a knitting needle or a kebab skewer. Now attach the bracket - instructions are usually included.
  11. Hang in the lantern stick, put the lantern light in it and admire your great paper mache lantern.
